New York City’s Manhattan is where Scarlett Ingrid Johansson entered the world on November 22, 1984. Karsten Olaf Johansson, her father, is a Danish architect. Her Swedish-American grandmother was raised by her art historian, screenwriter, and film director paternal grandpa, Ejner Johansson.

Melanie Sloan, a New Yorker and producer, is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent from Poland and Russia; the family’s original surname was Schlamberg; Johansson identifies as Jewish. 

Sister Vanessa is also an actor, and brothers Adrian and Hunter are older. From her dad’s first marriage, she also has an older half-brother named Christian. Johansson has citizenship in both the United States and her native Denmark.

During a 2017 episode of PBS’s Finding Your Roots, she learned that her maternal great-family grandfather perished in the Warsaw Ghetto during the Holocaust. In her early adolescence, when she was only thirteen years old, her parents split up. Johansson considers her accountant and educator grandmother Dorothy Sloan to be her dearest friend due to the tight relationship between the two.

From a young age, Johansson had an interest in performing and would put on shows for her family, complete with song and dance, to express her desire to work in the show business.
